We evaluated the effects of buffer belts created at four locations in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Fifteen medium- and largemammal species were photographed by sensor cameras installed in both the buffer belts and forests behind them. There were far fewer species and photographed events in the three buffer belts than in the forest, suggesting that wild animals in the forest did not freely invade the buffer belts. At one location, however, the numbers in the buffer belt were almost equivalent to those in the forest. The effects of buffer belts appeared to vary according to their shapes and the geography of the locations.
