After the Velvet Revolution, when many schools were reorganized as gymnasiums, many multi-year gymnasiums were established. However, the number of students in multi-year gymnasiums is capped, and the acceptance ratio for eight-year gymnasiums is remarkably high. There is also a marked difference in popularity among schools. Popularity is concentrated in gymnasiums that have some advantages, such as a high rate of students going on to higher education or a significant number of achievements. The key to success in the most popular gymnasiums lies in the social and economic environment of the candidates, as seen in the Czech examination culture and the questions of the entrance examination for the eight-year gymnasiums.
